ABSTRACT

Purpose: Organic food consumption decreases the risk of becoming obese or overweight. This study intends to see the influence of customer perceived value, COVID-19 fear, food neophobia, effort and natural content on the intention to purchase organic food (IPOF) that leads to the actual purchase of organic food (APOF). Moreover, organic food availability is a moderator between IPOF and APOF. Design/methodology/approach: PLS-SEM is used for hypothesis testing. A purposive sampling technique was followed to gather data from organic food consumers in Lahore, Gujranwala and Islamabad and a total of 479 questionnaires were part of the analysis. Findings The outcomes show that customer perceived value, effort and natural content is positively related to IPOF. Despite this, COVID-19 fear and food neophobia are negatively associated with IPOF. IPOF and organic food availability are positively related to APOF. Finally, organic food availability significantly moderated between IPOF and APOF. Practical implications: This study outcome reveals that companies of organic food can recognize customer perceived value, COVID-19 fear, food neophobia, effort, natural content and organic food availability in their decision-making if they determine the actual purchase of organic food. This study offers a valuable policy to companies of organic food to enhance customer's behavior in purchasing organic food in Pakistan. Besides, practitioners and academicians can benefit from this study finding. Originality/value: This initial research integrates customer perceived value, COVID-19 fear, food neophobia, effort, natural content, IPOF and organic food availability to determine APOF in the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, consumption value theory is followed to develop the framework.

Introduction:Non-invasive mechanical ventilation is a ventilatory alternative for COVID-19 cases. Background:To describe the characteristics and evolution of non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) in patients discharged from Provisional Center for moderate COVID-19 patients in Figali, Panama. Methods:A descriptive, retrospective, longitudinal stu was carried out in all adult patients discharged from June to July 2021 and who received non-invasive mechanical ventilation. A questionnaire was used using the digital individual medical record as primary source. Descriptive statistics techniques were used. Results:35.9% of the patients (78/217) who were admitted required non-invasive mechanical ventilation on the ninth day of symptoms and the second day after admission. 62.8% (49/78) were obese and 29.5% (23/78) hypertensive. The respiratory rate 30 and the decrease in the PaO2/FiO2 ratio decided the begining of non-invasive mechanical ventilation in 56.4% (78/217) of those admitted. 62.8% (49/78) had moderate-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, and the severity was related to ventilation failure out of the total number of ventilated patients. Ventilation was successful in 65.4% (51/78). PaO2/FiO2 <150 (62.9%), respiratory rate 30 (55.6%) and physical exhaustion (51.85%) decided ventilation failure. Conclusions:Non-invasive mechanical ventilation is an effective procedure in COVID-19 patients and moderate or severe respiratory distress;although its success is related to the less severe forms. Low PaO2/FiO2, together with symptoms, were key indicators to assess the begining, success or failure of NIMV;not so the values of PaO2, PaCO2 and SpO2.

ABSTRACT

Since the global pandemic of COVID-19, a huge challenge has been brought to human health and life. Here, we review the literature and present a comprehensive analysis to identify the relationship between obesity and CDVID-19. Obesity can cause chronic inflammation, respiratory impairment, vitamin D and other micronutrient deficiencies, and dysbiosis in humans, thereby affecting susceptibility and disease severity of COVID-19, as well as the body's response to the vaccine. The COVID-19 outbreak causes psychological stress, sleep disturbance, increased sedentary behavior, and increased intake of fast foods and overprocessed foods, which will increase the risk of developing obesity. Over 50% of the world's population is currently overweight or obese, and the number of COVID-l9 cases has rapidly increased to over 470 million. According to the theory of public health prevention and control, we propose that a comprehensive program with rational dietary action as the core is the optimal strategy for and controlling preventing and controlling obesity and COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The nutritional and anthropometric status can be essential in determining their immune response to vaccines. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the association between diet quality and anthropometric indices with the side effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and the SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G titer among Kurdish adults. Design/methodology/approach: This cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted between December 2021 and February 2022. This paper included data on 115 adults, 20-89 years old, from the Kurdistan region. Dietary information was collected using a short food frequency questionnaire, and diet quality was assessed using a plant-based healthy diet score. A blood test was performed to measure the SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobin G (IgG) titer after the vaccination's first and second doses. Findings: Overweight and obese subjects reported more local pain, myalgia, headache, local bruising and local reactions after receiving the first dose of the vaccine (p = 0.04). People on a less healthy diet reported more local pain, myalgia and headache (p = 0.04) and more local bruising and reactions (p = 0.01) after receiving the second dose of the vaccine. On the other hand, the authors observed that those with healthy dietary habits had more IgG titer after the first and second doses of vaccination than those with less healthy dietary habits (p = 0.001). Originality/valueThe results showed that participants with a healthy diet and normal weight status had fewer side effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine than obese people and those with a less healthy diet.

Purpose: The pandemic of COVID-19 led to considerable challenges with respect to people's health, dietary behavior and satisfaction with life. This study aims to investigate perceived stress levels, in relation to diet quality and life satisfaction in Greek adults, during the COVID-19 lockdown. Design/methodology/approach: This is a cross-sectional study which took place in Greece in the course of the strict lockdown period, in the third COVID-19 wave. A sample of 2,029 adults aged 18 years and above participated in an online survey. The questionnaire consisted of questions on sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics. The Perceived Stress Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Mediterranean Diet Assessment Tool were also used. Findings: Linear regression has shown that women (p < 0.0001), younger individuals (p < 0.0001), obese individuals (p = 0.047), those with lower levels of satisfaction with life (p < 0.0001) and lower adherence to Mediterranean diet (p = 0.0001) were positively associated with higher levels of stress. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study conducted in Greece aiming at investigating concurrently, levels of perceived stress, with respect to levels of satisfaction with life and diet quality in adults, during the lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Regarding the investigation of the factors related to the hospitalization of patients with Mucormycosis after being infected with Covid-19, several preliminary studies have been conducted in the hospital, but these studies were conducted in a small environment and have a smaller sample size. Therefore, the aim of the present systematic review study is to examine the factors affecting the hospitalization of patients with mucormycosis after being infected with covid-19. Methods: The current systematic review study was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines (preferred reporting items for systematic seviews and meta-analyses). For this study, the keywords "2019-nCoV", "COVID-19", "SARS-CoV-2", "Coronaviruses", "Hospitaliz", "Factor" and "Mucormycosis" in MagIran, SID, ISI, embase databases, ProQuest, PubMed, scopus were searched. Results: diabetes mellitus, old age, high body mass index, kidney disease, high blood pressure and smoking significantly increase the need for hospitalization in patients with mucormycosis after contracting covid-19. Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the risk of hospitalization due to Mucormycosis after the covid-19 disease is significantly related to obesity, old age and underlying diseases..

Background: COVID-19 patients may experience lon-lasting symptoms from weeks to even months. Aim: To evaluate long-term cognitive impairment based on the severity of symptoms of COVID-19 infection in a primary health system setting. Material and methods: From a database of 363 patients, 83 cases aged 47 +or- 15 years, (58% females) were selected from June to August 2020. In patients who survived the virus, 24 infection-related symptoms were collected to create three severity clusters (mild, moderate, and severe). The follow-up time was at least seven months. Comparing the first two clusters with the severe cluster, the existence of brain fog and risk factors (obesity, hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung disease, and hypothyroidism) were analyzed. Results: Thirty-one patients (37%) had persistent symptoms lasting up to 240 days. Fifty-one patients (61%) experienced brain fog. Concentration was affected by symptom severity (odds ratio [OR] 3.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-10.46, p = 0.02). Short- or long-term memory loss was not affected. Moreover, symptom severity was related to brain fog (OR 3.16, 95% CI 1.05-9.51, p = 0.04). Patients with persistent symptoms had a concentration impairment associated with severity patterns (OR 24.3, 95% CI 1.73-340.11, p = 0.03). Conclusions: Brain fog is associated with symptom severity in COVID-19 survivors and lasts for more than eight months.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: According to scientific studies, a high incidence of thrombotic events is known in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Less than 50% of pulmonary embolisms (PE) are associated with signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower extremities. Background: To identify significant risk factors for thrombosis thrombosis (DVT) in intensive care patients with COVID-19. Materials and methods: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study that included 465 adult patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit. All patients underwent computer tomography of the chest organs, ultrasound angioscanning of lower extremities, body mass index was calculated, the presence of comorbotity diseases and indicators of volumetric blood saturation were considered. The level of D-dimer in blood plasma, coagulation parameters (fibrinogen, factor VIII) were taken from laboratory parameters in calculations. For subgroups with 5 or fewer people, the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used. For quantitative variables, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficient were used. For multiple variables, ordered logistic regression models were built, with likelihood ratio tests performed to compare the models. Results: A total of 465 patients were included in the study. Comorbidities were present in 435 of 465 patients (93.55%) had at least one comorbidity. The most common was arterial hypertension - 370 (79.57%), followed by chronic heart failure - 196 (42.15%), obesity - 161 (34.62%), diabetes mellitus - 144 (30.97%), chronic renal failure (CRF) -58 (12.47%) and oncological diseases -25 (5.38%). The average body mass index was 29.7 kg/m2. In patients with DVT and venostasis, the body mass index (BMI) was more than 30 kg/m2 than without DVT (32.57+or-10.92 kg/m2, and 30.24+or-6.85 kg/m2, versus 29.22+or-6.46 kg/m2, respectively). Ultrasound angioscanning (USAS) confirmed deep vein thrombosis in 60 patients (13.8%) and was associated with older age (71.12+or-13.98 versus 67.20+or-11.16, p < 0.006), venous stasis was detected in 56 patients (12%) no DVT was detected in the rest of the studied patients. In the majority of cases, DVT was detected in the tibial segment -26 (43.33%), in 18 (30%) patients it was diagnosed in the popliteal veins and in 14 (23.33%) cases in the femoral segment. Diabetes mellitus (p=0.041), obesity (p=0.01) and CRF (p=0.028) were also significant risk factors for DVT. Conclusions: Significant risk factors for deep vein thrombosis in intensive care patients with COVID-19 are high levels of D-dimer (>=2.33 g/ml) and comorbidities such as obesity, chronic kidney failure, and diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the effect of perioperative oral nutritional supplementation on the short-term curative effect of obese patients after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Methods: A prospective research method was adopted. The clinical data of 218 obese patients who underwent LSG in Ningxia Medical University General Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021 were selected. The patients who received oral nutritional supplement therapy during the perioperative period were set as the experimental group, and those who received conventional treatment were set as the control group. Observation indicators: (1) Grouping of enrolled patients. (2) Postoperative and follow-up situation. (3) Nutrition-related indicators. (4) Diet compliance. (5) Status of weight loss-related indicators. Follow-up visits were conducted by telephone, We Chat and outpatient visits. The patients were followed up once 30 days after discharge, including albumin (Alb), hemoglobin (Hb), dietary compliance and weight loss-related indicators. The follow-up time will end in February 2022. The measurement data with normal distribution were expressed as x+or-s, and the comparison between groups was performed by independent sample t test. The measurement data is represented by M (range), and the comparison between groups is performed by Mann?Whitney U test. Enumeration data were expressed as absolute numbers or percentages, and the X2 test was used for comparison between groups. Repeated measures data were analyzed by repeated measures analysis of variance. The rank sum test was used to compare the rank data. Results (1) Grouping of the enrolled patients. Screened 218 eligible patients;42 males and 176 females;age (32+or-9) years;body mass index (BMI) (39+or-7) kg/m2. Among the 218 patients, there were 109 cases in the test group and 109 cases in the control group. Gender (male, female), age, BMI, preoperative Alb, and preoperative Hb of patients in the test group were 17 and 92 cases, (33+or-9) years old, (39+or-7) kg/m2, (40.6+or-4.8) g /L, (141.7+or-13.9) g/L;the above indicators in the control group were 25 and 84 cases, (31+or-8) years old, (39+or-8) kg/m2, (40.9+or-4.2) g/L, (142.9+or-9.7) g/L;there was no significant difference in the above (X2=1.89, t=-1.52, 0.51, 0.40, 0.71, P > 0.05). (2) Postoperative and follow-up situation. The first hospitalization time and first hospitalization expenses of the patients in the experimental group were (9.1+or-2.9) d and (3.6+or-0.5) ten thousand yuan respectively;the above indicators of the patients in the control group were (4.9+or-1.0) ten thousand yuan respectively;There were statistically significant differences in the above indicators between the two groups (t=5.58, 12.38, P < 0.05). Among the 218 patients, 119 were followed up, including 62 in the experimental group and 57 in the control group. The 119 patients were followed up for 31.0 (25.0-38.0) days. Among the 218 patients, 14 cases had postoperative complications and led to rehospitalization, including 2 cases in the experimental group, 1 case of nausea and vomiting and 1 case of intestinal obstruction;12 cases in the control group, 10 cases of nausea and vomiting, gastric fistula 2 cases;there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in hospital readmission (X2=7.63, P < 0.05). The time interval between re-admission and first discharge of 14 patients was (22.0+or-6.7) days. (3) Nutrition-related indicators. The Alb and Hb levels of 62 patients in the experimental group who were followed up before operation, before the first discharge, and 1 month after operation were (40.4+or-5.5) g/L, (35.9+or-3.8) g/L, (45.4+or-2.9) g/L, respectively and (140.8+or-13.9) g/L, (130.5+or-16.9) g/L, (147.8+or-17.2) g/L;the above indicators of 57 patients in the control group were (41.2+or-3.9) g/L, (34.2 +or-3.9) g/L, (42.7+or-5.3) g/L and (143.0+or-9.7) g/L, (122.9+or-12.8) g/L, (139.0+or-11.4) g/L;There was a statistically significant difference between the Alb and Hb groups from preoperative to postoperative 1 mont

ABSTRACT

This study verified the influence of the addition of castanets almond flour (Terminalia catappa L.) in the fermentation process of bread, analyzing attributes such as volume, weight, color, and flavor. The actions were coordinated remotely, in a domestic environment, in the city of Fortaleza (Ceara, Brazil) due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). About 2 kg of castanets were collected and the processing process included washing, pulp extraction, drying, roasting, and endocarp breaking. The ingredients were placed in a bowl and homogenized until completely incorporated, following the process of kneading, resting, kneading, shaping, fermentation and cooking. For the study, the evaluation was carried out in quadruplicate, with four samples of each dough, these being named Basic Bread (PB) and Chestnut Bread (PC). The dough showed growth between minutes 0 to 60, however, there was a regression between minutes 90 to 120. It is possible to observe that the dough reached its peak of fermentation between 30 and 60 minutes. The PB samples showed an external golden color and white crumb caused by the Maillard Reaction, possibly from the added butter, and had small alveoli. The PB sample had a neutral taste but was salty. No interference was observed in the bread fermentation process with the addition of castanets flour.

Introduction: The diagnosis of malnutrition has had a difficult historical process and its concept has gone through numerous attempts to define it. The word undernourishment and especially the term malnutrition creates a lot of confusion among scholars of the subject. In the last decade, various consensuses have emerged to classify malnutrition associated with diseases together with the burden represented by overweight and obesity in the presence of chronic and acute diseases. Background: To identify how new technologies improve knowledge of nutritional disorders through the description and integration of their body compartments, but they are not available to health teams or patients in various work settings. Findings: Nutrition is a science made up of a set of scientific disciplines that range from exact sciences to political sciences. The application of the clinical method as a modality of the scientific method makes it necessary to consider nutrition also with this vision and not as the last option of the doctor in a diagnostic or therapeutic intervention, contaminated by myths, taboos and cultural prejudices. Clinical medicine provides hard skills acquired in the form of knowledge and skills throughout pre-professional and postgraduate training, which together with soft skills will guarantee successful work, including hostile, toxic and/or chaotic cultural environments. Conclusions: There are tendencies to follow patterns and guides of societies in countries with great financial and technological resources for research, which are not always in line with our realities. The appearance of the COVID-19 pandemic has posed new challenges and serious threats to both people and health systems globally, significantly affecting elderly patients, those with cancer and chronic diseases, along with the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic, obesity with that of the Coronavirus.

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is one of the major non-communicable diseases among patients suffering from COVID-19, which increases the likelihood of hospital admission mortality. While Metformin has been found effective in reducing the mortality associated with COVID-19, there is a need to update the existing meta-analyses and quantitively synthesize the findings regarding the effect of Metformin in reducing mortality. Methods: We undertook a meta-analysis of 21 studies after searching for epidemiological studies systematically in PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Science Direct. We used odds ratios and their respective 95% confidence interval (CI) for a binary outcome, which was mortality, to examine the effect of Metformin on mortality. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic and Q-test statistics. We evaluated the publication bias using a funnel plot, which was further confirmed by eager test statistics. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Overall, the findings revealed that Metformin reduced mortality by about 35%, and the results were statistically significant (OR= 0.66;95% CI 0.62 to 0.69;p < 0.05). This revealed that patients who took Metformin had improved survival by more than one-third than those who were not given Metformin. We found a relatively higher heterogeneity with an I2 value of 85.60% (Chi-squared = 138.85). The inverted funnel plot for the findings for the effect of Metformin on mortality was asymmetrical with test statistics for an eager test of -3.64 and a P-value of 0.002. Conclusion: The present updated meta-analysis revealed a positive effect of Metformin in reducing mortality among diabetic patients suffering from COVID-19. However, before implementing Metformin at a larger scale, clinicians and endocrinologists need to assess the risks versus benefits associated with Metformin for diabetic patients of COVID-19. Also, future studies are warranted to investigate the effects of Metformin for non-diabetic patients.

For centuries, the Hijra enjoyed a special respect in the Hindu and Islamic cultures however, over the time, stigmatization took its toll and today the community is pushed to live on extreme societal margin. The present study was undertaken to assess the nutritional status of 304 transgender (Male to Female) residing in and around Mumbai using a mixed method approach. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique with the help of three Community Based Organisations (CBOs) working in close association with transgender. Data related to their nutritional status was collected before the pandemic using Food Frequency Questionnaire, 24-hr Recall and anthropometric measurements. Data related to impact of COVID-19 pandemic on food habits of transgender was collected from eight key informants working with CBOs using in-depth telephonic interviews. Results indicated that consumption of calorie dense junk foods was high and that of immunity building micronutrient dense foods such as fruits, vegetables and milk was notably low. Mean intake of macronutrients was adequate but that of micronutrients was lower for the majority. BMI assessment showed that 13 and 49% were underweight and overweight /obese respectively. COVID-19 pandemic further worsened nutritional status. The findings of the study may serve as basis for formulation of effective nutrition intervention programmes for transgender community.

ABSTRACT

A new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) broke out at the end of 2019 in Wuhan (China). The disease has become a global pandemic and claimed more than 6 million lives after spreading rapidly around the world. Issues related to the complicated course of COVID-19 mechanisms continue to be the subject of active study. It is known that morbidity and mortality increase dramatically with increasing age and concomitant diseases, including obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Although most infected people recover, even young and otherwise healthy patients can get sick with this disease. In this regard, an urgent task is to search for specific genetic factors that can explain the predisposition of people to infection and the development of a severe COVID-19 form. Human genetic determinants can provide the scientific basis for disease prediction and the development of personalized therapies to counteract the epidemic. In addition, cases of repeated infection with SARS-CoV-2 are increasingly being registered, which occurs 1-6 months after initial infection on average and depends on the virus genome structure. Studies conducted on sequencing viral genomes have shown that some patients were re-infected with the same strain of coronavirus, while others were different. This, in turn, causes researchers concerns about the effectiveness of immunity after infection and vaccine reliability. The genetic characteristics of a person and a virus commonly determine the tendency for reinfection. It is difficult to determine the true COVID-19 reinfection prevalence, which is explained by the low detectability of asymptomatic reinfection and the fact that many patients with a mild course of the disease were not tested at an early stage of the pandemic. Therefore, the true prevalence of reinfection with COVID-19 does not reflect the current reality. There are many more cases of reinfection than are described in the literature. In this regard, the true contribution of a virus' genetic features to reinfection of COVID-19 can be determined only after population studies, and when developing immunization programs against a COVID-19, it is necessary to take into account the prevalence of reinfection in the population.

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is one among the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) which might occur due to genetic, environmental, physiological and behavioural factors. MetS is increasing alarmingly in the population. Addressing the modifiable factors to reduce the risk is of prime importance. The current study is intended to observe the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome criteria with respect to its relation to lifestyle factors among subjects post pandemic situation and the MetS incidence to understand how the disease can be prevented and the means to improve the public health. Random sampling method was used to enrol 20-50 year old (male and female) urban adults of Bengaluru into the study. Type-I-diabetics, lactating and pregnant women, post-cardiac surgery/ pre-post-transplant/ covid-19 recovered patients were excluded. Height, weight, Waist-Circumference (WC) and hip-circumference were measured. BMI and Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) were calculated. Fasting Blood Glucose (FBS), Triglycerides (TG), HDL, Blood Pressure (BP) values were analysed and recorded. Diet recall was captured and calories consumed per day was estimated. The habits of exercise routine, smoking, tobacco chewing and alcohol were observed. IDF (International Diabetes Federation, 2006) criteria was used to categorise MetS. The data was analysed using relevant statistical tools. A total of 1211 adults (females 486 and males 725) were assessed. High WC indicating central obesity was observed in 55%. High FBS was observed in 29%. Hyper-triglyceridemia was more in males (36%) than females (19%). Low HDL was observed in 65% females against 43% males. High BP was observed among 10% in males and 8% in females. Lack of exercise was observed among 81% of the adults. Due to pandemic situation 10.7% stopped doing exercise. Moderate activity in 5.6% and vigorous activity in 2.8% was recorded;68% of the subjects were consuming >2000 calories/day on an average;18.6% were alcoholic. MetS was observed in 10.6% and MetS-2 criteria in 33.4% and MetS-1criteria in 24.5% before pandemic situation and post pandemic there was an increase. MetS was observed in 12.2% and MetS-2criteria in 49.7% and MetS-1criteria in 27.9% post pandemic. The lack of exercise and high-calorie consumption had a significant correlation with altered lipid values and central obesity. High WC had significant relation to High BMI. WHR had very significant correlation with high FBS and TG. Women had significantly high WC compared to men. The alcohol habit had a significant correlation with hypertriglyceridemia in males. Increased calorie consumption had a moderate correlation with raised FBS and WHR. MetS was significantly observed in those who had lack of exercise, high calorie consumption and alcohol habit. Findings suggest that MetS is in rise in 31-50 year age group. Central obesity, dyslipidemia and high FBS were predominant in 31-40 year group. High BP was observed in 45-50 years age group. Identifying and educating the young adults to correct their life style is the need of the hour to reduce increase of MetS in community.

ABSTRACT

The severity of COVID-19 disease varies substantially between individuals, with some infections being asymptomatic while others are fatal. Several risk factors have been identified that affect the progression of SARS-CoV-2 to severe COVID-19. They include age, smoking and presence of underlying comorbidities such as respiratory illness, HIV, anemia and obesity. Given that respiratory illness is one such comorbidity and is affected by hand hygiene, it is plausible that improving access to hand washing could lower the risk of severe COVID-19 among a population. In this paper, we estimate the potential impact of improved access to hand washing on the risk of respiratory illness and its knock-on impact on the risk of developing severe COVID-19 disease across Zimbabwe. We use a geospatial model that allows us to estimate differential clinical risk at the district level. Results show that the current risk of severe disease is heterogeneous across the country, due to differences in individual characteristics and household conditions. This study demonstrates how household level improved access to handwashing could lead to reductions in the risk of severe COVID-19 of up to 16% from the estimated current levels across all districts. Taken alongside the likely impact on transmission of SARS-CoV-2 itself, as well as countless other pathogens, this result adds further support for the expansion of access to hand washing across the country. It also highlights the spatial differences in risk of severe COVID-19, and thus the opportunity for better planning to focus limited resources in high risk areas in order to potentially reduce the number of severe cases.

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted between 2021 and 2022 among the post-COVID patients in Ernakulam district of Kerala by assessing Dietary Diversity Score (DDS), comorbidities, symptoms during COVID and post-COVID, fatigue, stress, and insomnia. The research was a six-month community-based prospective cohort study comprising 250 patients. Out of the 250 patients, 41.6% were male and 58.4% were female. On studying the age-wise distribution of patients, the majority (38%) belonged to the 18-29-year age group. Among the patients, 26% had a high Dietary Diversity Score. The most common comorbidities observed were hypertension (24%), followed by obesity (20.8%), diabetes mellitus (19.2%), and cardiovascular disease (16.8%), respectively. During the period of infection, the most common symptom among patients was tiredness (89.2%), followed by fever (83.2%), headache (78.8%), dry cough (67.6%), and loss of taste or smell (56.4%). Breathlessness (30%), chest pain (26%), and diarrhea (9.2%) were the other significant symptoms. The most prevalent post-COVID symptoms in various systems among patients were loss of appetite (89%), weakness (62.4%), sore throat (51.6%), dry cough (40.4%), joint pain (26.8%), and pain/burning in the chest (14.8%). During COVID, 42.4% of the patients were severely fatigued, 61.2% of the patients had a moderate level of perceived stress, and 44.4% of the patients had subthreshold insomnia. During post-COVID, 80.4% were severely fatigued;moderate stresswas found in 40%, of the subjects;and 22.8% of the study subjects had subthreshold insomnia. The Pearson's coefficient of correlation, 'r', between stress and insomnia among study subjects was 0.37. The obtained t-value for stress (7.14 > 2.58), fatigue (8.31 > 2.58), and insomnia (10.97 > 2.58) were significant. Post-COVID is associated with comorbidities and disease severity. The prevalence of new-onset fatigue, perceived stress, and insomnia was significant among COVID-19 survivors.

ABSTRACT

Under the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in immune enhancement and anti-obesity is increasing. Thus, in this study, we investigated whether Kadsura japonica fruits (KJF) exhibits immunostimulatory activity and anti-obesity activity. KJF increased the production of immunostimulatory factors and phagocytosis in RAW264.7 cells. Inhibition of TLR2 and TLR4 blocked KJF-mediated production of immunostimulatory factors in RAW264.7 cells. In addition, the inhibition of MAPK and PI3 K/AKT signaling pathway reduced KJF-mediated production of immunostimulatory factors, and the activation of MAPK and PI3 K/AKT signaling pathway by KJF suppressed the inhibition of TLR2/4. KJF attenuated the lipid accumulation and the protein expression such as CEBPa, PPARP, perilipin-1, adiponectin, and FABP4 related to the lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, KJF inhibited excessive proliferation of 3T3-L1 cells and protein expressions such as beta-catenin and cyclin D1 related to cell growth. These findings indicate that KJF may have immunostimulatory activity and anti-obesity activity.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study investigates dietary supplement intakes by examining the characteristics of dietary and health-related behaviors. Data were obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Dietary and health-related behaviors were also examined before and after the occurrence of COVID-19 and household types (multi-members vs. single person). Methods: Data used in this study were collected from the 2019-2020 KNHANES by including adults aged 19 to 64 years. Pregnant, lactating, and subjects consuming calories less than 500 and more than 5,000 were excluded. Differences in dietary and health-related behaviors before and after COVID-19, and between the two types of households were analyzed by Chi-square analyses using Rao-Scott. Logistic regression analyses were applied to determine which dietary and health-related behaviors affected the dietary supplement intakes. In addition, descriptive analysis was run for demographic characteristics. Results: The dietary supplement intake rate differed significantly with respect to the gender, age, education, marital status, and household income. Dietary supplement intakes, frequency of eating out, obesity, and body weight changes were significantly different before and after COVID-19. In addition, meal evaluation, frequency of eating out, drinking, smoking, activity, subjective health evaluation, and body weight changes showed significant differences by household type. Attitude towards nutrition, activity, meal evaluation, obesity, and smoking were factors that affected the intake of dietary supplements. Conclusions: While increased intake of dietary supplements is a prevalent phenomenon, this intake needs to be monitored and studied closely, considering the sociodemographic characteristics and dietary and health-related behaviors. Furthermore, the dietary supplement intake trend after COVID-19 needs to be studied along with food intake.

ABSTRACT

Background:Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) forms a very important part of the protective armour for the frontline warriors in this battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Present study aimed to assess the work efficiency, physical and neurological dysfunction associated with the number of Personal Protective Equipment-donned working hours by Doctors in a Covid care center. Material & Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted among the doctors working in COVID ward of AVMCH during the June 2021 to November 2021. All the doctors worked in COVID-19 ward and willing to be part of study were included. Doctors with presence of co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension, asthma, obesity, infected with COVID-19 and not willing were excluded. Ethical clearance for the study was obtained from the institution prior to initiation of study and consent was taken from all the participants. An online validated questionnaire was shared to participants through Google form and were requested to fill the form. The collected response were analysed using STATA v7 for statistical analysis. Result: Total of 220 participants included in the study, with mean age of 26.75+or-2.69 yrs. among them 87 were female participant and 133 were male participants. On assessment of questionnaire agreed for respective questions as difficulty in decision making (74.6%), difficulty in communication (93.1%), missing simple prescriptions (83.6%), urge to doff (66.4%), headache (78.1%), difficulty in writing (69.1%), and difficulty in seeing (70%). Conclusion: In present study we documented higher incidence of the physical dysfunction and neurological dysfunction among the doctors worked in COVID-19 care associated with use of PPE.
